Between Connection and Contradiction

How can images communicate complex meaning? The series Between Connection and Contradiction explores the construction of symbolic visual languages through abstraction and geometry.

There are two major inspirations: architectural representation that can communicate either precise instructions or spatial experience, and spaces of meaning; temples, churches, mosques, where images communicate cultural narratives.

I attempt to build my own visual language and insert meaning into relationships between forms. Recurring geometries are conceptualized as characters and their interactions and composition as narratives.

 

Ultimately, the series is an exploration of how meaning is constructed. It is less concerned with describing the world and more interested in exploring how we come to recognize and communicate meaning through images at all.

 

Every painting in this series is produced spontaneously. With no predetermined composition, they find form intuitively, and the process is conceptualized as a conversation. We speak, but we rarely plan sentences; we instinctively choose one of many possibilities in the moment. My paintings emerge in a similar process.

 

As the painting progresses, I search for the relationships between its forms, recognize geometries and their interactions, and gradually assign them fluid meanings through reflections. They acquire meaning during and afterwards, and the paintings become both the process and the result.
